About me

Dr Fernando Casals Seoane

I am a consultant gastroenterologist and hold a doctorate in medicine. I have worked in the Gastroenterology Department of La Princesa University Hospital in Madrid since 2009, where I coordinate the Inpatient Unit and perform digestive endoscopy and abdominal ultrasound. I combine clinical practice with teaching, as a professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid and residency tutor, and with clinical research.

I am opening this private practice for a simple reason: demand has far outgrown what my current schedule allows, and some patients cannot afford to wait months for someone to review their case properly.

Clinical research

Author of publications in The New England Journal of Medicine, The American Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Mucosal Immunology, among others. Principal investigator in international clinical trials on acute pancreatitis and cystic fibrosis.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with my health insurance?

This is a private practice. If your policy is a reimbursement policy, you pay for the consultation and your insurer may refund part or all of it, depending on the terms of each policy. You receive an invoice itemised the way insurers need it.

How much does a consultation cost?

The first visit costs 180 € and a follow-up 150 €. A video consultation costs 150 €. Tests (endoscopy, ultrasound, FibroScan, manometry or blood work) are quoted separately by the hospital, which tells you the exact price before they are carried out. You always receive an invoice valid for reimbursement policies.

Do I need a referral from another doctor?

No. You can book directly through the website, by WhatsApp or by phone. If you have previous reports or tests, bring them: they save time and sometimes avoid repeating tests.

Where is the clinic and how do I get there?

At Hospital Ruber Juan Bravo, C/ Juan Bravo 39, 9th floor, in the Salamanca district. Note: the hospital has another building at number 49; the clinic is at number 39. The nearest metro stations are Núñez de Balboa (lines 5 and 9) and Diego de León (lines 4, 5 and 6), and the hospital has a car park.

What should I bring to the first consultation?

Every report, blood test, endoscopy and imaging study you have, however old, plus a list of the medication you currently take. If you have them digitally, bring them on your phone or printed.

Can you perform my endoscopy?

Yes. I personally perform diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy at Hospital Ruber Juan Bravo. If you need a test, it is arranged from the consultation itself and you are told the price before it goes ahead.

How does the video consultation work?

It runs exactly like an in-person visit and costs €150. It suits second opinions, reviewing results, adjusting treatment and follow-up. If an examination or a test is needed afterwards, an in-person appointment is arranged.

I live outside Madrid or outside Spain. Can I consult you?

Yes. I see patients from across Spain and abroad by video. The consultation can be held in any of the three languages I speak: Spanish, English and Italian.

What is the European Board and why does it matter?

It is the European accreditation for the specialty, awarded after passing an examination that verifies training meets the standard required across the European Union. Few gastroenterologists in Spain hold it, and it represents an independent verification of the level of training.
