What it shows

Liver: fatty liver, focal lesions, signs of advanced fibrosis
Gallbladder and bile ducts: stones, polyps, duct dilation
Pancreas, kidneys and spleen
Abdominal fluid and enlarged lymph nodes
Initial assessment of abdominal pain or abnormal liver blood tests

The advantage of doing it in clinic

Being able to scan you during the visit itself changes things considerably. Many questions are settled on the spot: whether that discomfort on the right side comes from the gallbladder, whether the liver is fatty, whether there is anything to explain raised transaminases.

When a finding needs more detail, other tests follow. But a good share of consultations are resolved there and then, without an extra appointment or weeks of waiting.

Preparation

Six to eight hours' fasting if the gallbladder or pancreas is to be examined
No special preparation is needed otherwise
Bring any previous imaging so that comparison is possible

Frequently asked questions

Does it replace a CT or MRI scan?

Not always, but it is the first test in a great many situations and is often sufficient. When it is not, it helps decide which test should come next and avoids unnecessary ones.

Does it involve radiation?

None at all. It uses ultrasound and can be repeated as often as needed, including in pregnancy.
